The Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) is ACTFL’s flagship assessment, designed to evaluate real-world speaking ability in over 120 languages.
This 15–30-minute telephonic interview is scheduled at a time convenient for both the test taker and the ACTFL-certified OPI Tester. During the session, the tester engages the candidate in open-ended questions aligned with the ACTFL Proficiency Scale, ranging from Novice Low to Superior.
The OPI is adaptive, meaning that the level and complexity of questions adjust according to the test taker’s responses—making it a dynamic and accurate measure of spoken language proficiency. While it feels like a natural conversation, every element follows a standardized interview protocol to ensure reliability and fairness.
All interviews are recorded and evaluated by ACTFL-certified raters, providing a validated and internationally recognized assessment of your speaking skills.
The Oral Proficiency Interview – computer (OPIc) is a 20–40-minute online speaking test designed to evaluate language proficiency conveniently and accurately.
Available in the most commonly tested languages, the OPIc is based on the same rigorous testing protocols as the traditional OPI. Unlike the OPI, the OPIc is an on-demand assessment, meaning it can be taken anytime, anywhere — no advance scheduling required. The test is available 24/7/365 for maximum flexibility.
During the test, candidates listen to open-ended questions presented by a virtual Avatar and respond using a computer with a headset and microphone. All responses are recorded and evaluated by ACTFL-certified OPIc Raters, ensuring a human-rated, standardized, and globally recognized assessment of speaking proficiency.
The Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) is a 20–80-minute online assessment designed to evaluate your ability to write effectively in real-world situations.
Delivered entirely via the internet, the WPT can be taken anytime and anywhere that’s convenient for the test taker. The test consists of several open-ended prompts covering a range of topics that are culturally relevant and familiar, allowing candidates to demonstrate their writing skills in context.
All written responses are evaluated by ACTFL-certified human raters, ensuring that every assessment meets the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and reliability in language testing.
The Listening Proficiency Test (LPT) is a 50–125-minute online assessment designed to measure a test taker’s listening comprehension skills across real-world contexts.
Delivered via the internet, the LPT presents audio passages covering a wide range of topics and situations. After each passage, test takers respond to multiple-choice questions that assess their understanding of main ideas, details, inferences, and overall comprehension.
The LPT is machine-scored, providing an efficient and objective evaluation of listening proficiency according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
The Reading Proficiency Test (RPT) is a 50–125-minute online assessment designed to measure a test taker’s reading comprehension skills across a variety of authentic contexts.
